Solar Energy Awareness and Demonstration Seminars, a not-for-profit organization, is a seminar center and fledgling self-sufficient alternative-energy community on 60 acres in rural Maine. For 30 years, we have been teaching hands-on solar workshops on a wide range of topics, including solar-thermal (hot water or air) panels, photovoltaic (PV/electric) module assembly, and hydroponic-
grow systems. The movement continues to expand in the area of establishing a photovoltaic cooperative. This year (2009), SEADS established our alternative energy / environmental land-trust. We are using a community-land-trust model and stress voluntary cooperation and mutual aid -- sharing, working with others, and using group consensus. Gardens, greenhouse, and independent solar-electricity and plumbing are our small step toward self-sufficiency and world peace. We promote and participate in peace activism and activities, stressing a renewable-energy future. Families interested in living in an intentional community have an opportunity for individual, limited-equity home ownership on common land, after a provisional period. Members will share responsibilities and benefits of operating the solar-powered seminar center and traveler hostel in our common building. We are now in the first stages of the land-trust operation which will include 5 to 7 solar powered homesteads.
